Description

7 Howard Park Drive in Kilmarnock is a pair of semi-detached, two-storey, two-bay villas built around 1904 in a hybrid Arts & Crafts and Glasgow style. The exterior features red quarry-faced Ballochmyle ashlar with polished dressings and bay windows. The ground floor has dressed sills and a battlemented parapet on the bay window.

On the principal elevation, No. 8 has a pilaster entrance arch with an impost moulding that supports a projecting hoodmould. The entrance features a slightly recessed rectangular door frame topped with a Diocletian fanlight. To the left, there is a two-storey, four-light canted bay window with a deep stone base course, transoms, and mullions, topped with swept faux battlements that break through the eaves. The second bay on the first floor has a rectangular window. A red ashlar wall to the left of the house has a timber door leading to the rear. No. 7 mirrors this design but is reversed, with access to the rear through a wall and door.

The south elevation is a blind elevation with a wallhead chimney, while the north elevation is also blind and features a wallhead chimney. The timber sash and case windows on No. 8 include two-pane windows, with the upper lights having leaded and stained glass. No. 7 has ten-pane and four-pane upper sashes on the ground floor, with single-pane lower sashes; the first floor has eight-pane and six-pane upper sashes, with single-pane lower sashes. The roof is hipped and piended with grey slate, featuring overhanging timber blocked eaves and a piended pyramid fronted roof over the bay windows. Terracotta ridge tiles with ornate ball and stalk finials adorn the apexes. There are replacement aluminium flashings and valleys, with a red coursed ashlar stack that has a projecting neck cope and four cans. The painted cast-iron rainwater goods include gutters attached to the blocked eaves and plain downpipes, with no hoppers.

The interior was not seen in 2001.
