Description

Westmount is a late 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay asymmetrical Italianate dwelling house located at 78 Dundonald Road, Kilmarnock. The building features a central tower, a two-storey recessed bay to the left, and a two-storey projecting bay to the right. It is constructed from coursed ashlar sandstone and includes a base course, canted bays on either side, a string course above the first floor, and projecting eaves.

The principal elevation faces northwest and showcases a central tower with an elaborate porch supported by short Corinthian columns featuring polished granite shafts. The entrance has a panelled door with a fanlight above, an apron that is slightly arched and decorative, and a balustrade above that forms a balcony for the first-floor window. There is a recessed round-arched window on the first floor with a mask keystone, and a cantilevered balustraded balcony above the tower. The tower also has a tripartite arched window on its northwest face, flanked by attached columns, and is topped with overhanging eaves and a crowning weather-vane.

To the right, the two-storey projecting bay includes a two-storey canted bay and a string course at the first floor, with attached columns featuring foliate capitals. To the left, the two-storey recessed bay has a projecting tripartite window at the ground level with a piended roof, and a pair of round-arched windows with attached columns and foliate capitals on the first floor.

The windows throughout the building are two-pane sash and case style, with French windows on the second and third stages of the tower, also featuring fanlights. The roof is covered with slate and has a piended design.

The property is enclosed by coursed ashlar boundary walls that terminate in squared ashlar gatepiers topped with cushion caps.
