Description

Alma House, located at 17 Mill Street in Dalbeattie, is a mid-19th century, three-bay house featuring a single-storey, one-bay block to the right and a three-storey Italianate tower above. The building is constructed from coursed snecked granite, with painted ashlar dressings and smooth rusticated quoins.

The central entrance is framed by an architrave with moulded consoles that support a pediment. The tripartite vestibule door includes acid-etched glass, while all windows have raised margins, with consoled and corniced designs at the ground level. The windows are single light with aluminium framed two-pane glazing.

To the right, a slender three-storey tower rises from a wider single-storey bay at ground level. This tower features round-arched windows on the second floor and bipartite windows on the third floor. The building has plain eaves and piended slate roofs, with the tower showcasing bracketed eaves and a finial.

The rear elevation is a three-bay, two-storey structure made of roughly coursed granite, with a canted window on the left side at ground level only. It also has tall corniced stacks and piended slate roofs.

The property is enclosed by a low granite boundary wall that includes a pair of tall square granite gatepiers topped with ball finials, along with good cast-iron gates.
