Description

The Maxwell Arms Hotel, located on Maxwell Road in Dalbeattie, dates from the late 18th century and features 19th century alterations. It consists of a two-storey, three plus four bay terraced house layout, now serving as a hotel, with a taller two-storey, three-bay annex to the right that was added in the late 19th century.

The main hotel building has a smooth rendered facade with a regular seven-bay frontage. The entrance is located in the right section and is pilastered with a cornice above. All windows have raised painted margins and are sash and case style with plate glass glazing. The building is topped with a deep plain parapet that includes a cornice.

The slate roof is complemented by a sandstone ridge and features corniced axial stacks with octagonal cans.

The annex is a taller two-storey, three-bay structure made of bull-faced granite with polished margins and a bandcourse above the ground level. It has a central pilastered doorway topped with a block pediment, featuring a panelled door and a fanlight. Above the door is a single window, while the rest of the windows are bipartite, also in sash and case style with plate glass glazing. The annex has slate roofs, end skews, and end coped stacks, with octagonal cans on the right side. The rear elevation includes a harled single-storey flat-roofed extension.
