Description

This is a 2-storey, 3-bay villa, dated 1895 and designed by Gabriel Andrew. It is built in a shallow "L" shape with a single-storey enclosed entrance porch and a wing extending to the side. The villa is constructed from pink and yellow coursed ashlar sandstone, with a prominent deep rock-faced ashlar base course. Long and short quoins mark the corners and the sandstone courses are separated by distinct horizontal lines. The principal gables feature half-timbering with plain bargeboards.

The northwest (main) elevation features a recessed entrance porch with an arched entrance door, featuring a double timber panelled door. To the left of the porch is the main house, with a central bipartite window on both the ground and first floors. A projecting 5-light bay window is located to the right of the ground floor, with a matching tripartite window above on the first floor; both are topped with a half-timbered gable. A slightly advanced bay to the left has a 2-storey, 5-light piended bay window, also with a half-timbered gable above. An extended, single-storey wing is located to the far left, with tall paired windows.

The northeast elevation features a single-storey gabled extension with a window in the upper storey and attic. The southeast (rear) elevation has steps leading to a centrally positioned entrance door, with a smaller window to the left and a tripartite window above on the first floor. A bipartite window is found on both storeys to the right; a slightly advanced gable on the left features a tripartite window to the ground floor and a bipartite window to the first floor, with half-timbering to the gablehead. The rear of the porch has a bipartite window, and the single-storey wing to the right has a window to the rear.

The southwest elevation shows a porch on the ground floor, with a tripartite window in the gable end. A window is located to the left of the main gable, and a window is set in the upper storey and attic.

The windows are timber sash and case style with 2 panes, with the lower panes being moveable and concealed behind stone transoms at ground floor level. Plain plate glass is used in most windows, except for the coloured square quarry glazing in the upper lights of the first floor on the principal elevation, and 9-pane upper lights to the rear elevation and the wings. The roof is grey slate with overhanging eaves and exposed rafters to the main house, porch, and single-storey wing, with splayed eaves to the bay windows on the principal elevation. The gable ends are half-timbered with mock exposed rafters that follow the roofline. Decorative wrought-iron finials crown the gables. Metal ridging, valleys, and flashings are present, along with painted cast-iron rainwater goods, gutters above the exposed rafters, and downpipes. Yellow brick stacks are found on the side gableheads, decorated with paired bands of red brick and 7 plain yellow cans. A further stack is centrally located on the roof, with the same brick detailing and 3 cans.

The interior retains original timberwork, including skirting boards, panelled doors, a timber balustrade and newel post to the staircase, and cornicing. Metal guard rails are present below some first-floor windows. The entrance porch and door are as per the original plans.
