Description

The Old Men's Cabin, located in Howard Park, Kilmarnock, is a single-storey square pavilion built by Andrew Calderwood in the early 20th century, with later additions. The structure features a deep red brick base course and a half-timbered, harled, and painted upper section, supported by iron columns with timber brackets.

On the principal elevation (east), the half-timbered facade includes a central door surrounded by an in-filled brick door surround, with a recessed wing to the left featuring a central door and a recessed blind wing to the right. An open veranda spans the length of this elevation.

The south elevation has a blind advance central bay, a recessed bay to the left with a central door, and an original recessed blind elevation to the right that also has an open veranda with a brick in-filled bay.

The rear elevation (west) features a single-storey projecting blind wall at the center, with a recessed blind side wing to the left and a recessed side wing to the right that includes a door.

On the north elevation, there is an advanced bay at the center with a centrally placed door, a recessed bay to the right with a door, and an original recessed blind elevation to the left that has an open veranda.

The building has no original glazing, as it is now in-filled with brick. There are later timber doors leading to the rear additions. The roof is piended with grey slate, featuring overhanging splayed eaves, terracotta ridge tiles with arched scrolled finials, and painted cast-iron rainwater goods with gutters attached to the barge boarding. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 2001.
