Description
Paton and Baldwin's Sports Pavilion, located on Tullibody Road in Alloa, was designed by William Kerr and built between 1924 and 1926. This two-storey and attic structure has a roughly H-plan layout, featuring a symmetrical design with a four-bay center flanked by two advanced bays. It is situated next to a recreation ground that includes a bowling green. The pavilion is characterized by its octagonal stair towers with ogee roofs on the side elevations and is rendered with a cill course at the first floor on both the front and rear elevations. The first-floor openings are positioned close to the overhanging eaves, and there is a central three-stage square timber lantern with a clock on the second stage, which is glazed on the third stage. The building also has segmental-arched dormers.
The northwest (entrance) elevation features steps leading up to a full-width multi-pane glazed veranda that is recessed in the center, with bays separated by square pilasters. It has a timber bargeboard and two-leaf glazed entrance doors to the left. There is a ground floor window in the center of the advanced bays, which has a blocked semicircular fanlight.
On the northeast elevation, the center is recessed and includes a first-floor balcony supported by paired cast-iron Tuscan columns, with a plain iron balustrade. A stair tower is located to the right of the balcony, and the wallhead features chamfered ashlar copes along with a recessed glazed clearstorey above, while there are blocked openings below the wallhead.
The southeast elevation has a two-bay center flanked by two advanced bays, with an entrance at the center and returns of the advanced bays. There is a rectangular brick stack on the southeast pitch of the advanced bays to the right.
The southwest elevation mirrors the northeast elevation. The pavilion predominantly features multi-pane glazing in timber casement windows. It has a pantiled, piended roof with bell cast overhanging eaves, and a pitched felt roof over the veranda. The stair towers and clock lantern are topped with ogee copper roofs, and there is a flagpole on the stair towers along with square ridge ventilators.
The interior, as seen in 2012, has been remodelled in the later 20th century and includes a large hall on the first floor with timber dado rails and a timber floor. Some areas are panelled with upper parts featuring glazed timber doors. The dog-leg staircase in the octagonal towers has iron balustrades and a timber handrail.
