Description

The Family Tennis Club Pavilion, designed by Menzies and Cockburn in 1902, is a single-storey and basement structure with a square plan, situated facing the tennis courts. The pavilion features a timber veranda on the north (principal) elevation. It is constructed of red brick in Scottish bond, with ashlar lintels and cills. The overhanging eaves are adorned with decorative timber fretwork and timber boarding on the soffit.

The north elevation includes a five-step flight of stairs leading up to the veranda, which has a plain timber balustrade connecting chamfered square columns and basket arches that support the eaves. The entrance is set back and features a two-leaf panelled timber door with a rectangular fanlight above, flanked by a pair of windows that create a continuous glazing effect, all set within moulded timber frames. Stone steps on the west side lead down to the basement level. The south (rear) elevation has a door on the right and a blocked bipartite window on the left at the basement level. The west elevation has blocked openings at the basement.

The roof is swept and covered with clay tiles, featuring ridge tiles and finials, along with original rainwater goods. There is a stack on the south pitch.

Inside, as observed in 2013, the pavilion has timber boarded walls and ceiling, with a moulded timber cornice and a decorative metal attic hatch. The fire surround is tiled and made of cast iron, with a dentilled overmantel. The basement was refitted in the late 20th century.
