Description

5 Howard Street in Kilmarnock is a late 19th-century semi-detached dwelling house, featuring a shallow U-plan with six bays and two storeys plus an attic. The front is made of ashlar stone, with a base course and banded rustication on the ground floor of the central section. At the projecting ends, there are two-storey, five-light canted bays that include five panels of stone carving between the ground and first floors. A string course runs above the windows and doors on the ground floor, while the first-floor windows in the central section have moulded architraves and cills. The eaves are bracketed.

On the principal elevation, the central two bays have 4-centred arch bipartite windows on both the ground and first floors, with bipartite dormers above featuring pilaster strips and timber triangular gabled heads, finished with slate cheeks. The second and fifth bays contain 4-centred arched doorways with hoodmoulds and keystones, and there is a single 4-centred arched window above these doorways, along with semi-elliptical attic lights. The projecting ends showcase the five-light canted bays, which have panels of arabesque carvings at the first floor, and the piend roofs of the canted bays extend from the gables.

The windows are 2-pane sash and case style. The roof is slate, featuring tall coped stacks at the wall heads and smaller coped stacks at the centre of the roof. The interior was not seen in 2001.
