Description

10 Portland Road in Kilmarnock is a mid-19th century terrace consisting of two pairs of attached, two-storey, two-bay L-plan plain classical houses. The buildings are constructed from coursed ashlar, with harled and painted finishes. Each pair features giant angle pilasters and a heavy architraved eaves course. There is a projecting base course and moulded window margins.

On the north (principal) elevation, Nos. 10 and 12 have paired doors at the center, with architraved surrounds and bracketed canopies that end in stepped plaques. There is a single window with an architraved surround and a projecting lintel on either side. The first floor has four regularly placed bays, and the moulded eaves course projects east beyond the building line. Nos. 12 and 14 mirror this design but have the moulded eaves course projecting west into No. 16.

The east elevation connects to the rest of the terrace on both storeys, with a blind gable on the left return of No. 10. The south (rear) elevation was not visible as of 2001. The west elevation adjoins No. 16 Portland Road.

Nos. 12 and 14 have later two-pane timber sash and case windows, while Nos. 10 and 14 feature replacement PVCu two-pane windows. The houses have a piended grey slate roof with lead flashings, low yellow brick stacks with five low plain cans on the end gables, and eight low plain terracotta cans on the central stack. The north elevation has concealed rainwater goods.

Inside, the buildings retain some original timber features, including skirting boards and doors. Some ground floors are currently used as business premises.
