Description
The North Entrance Gate and Railing at Howard Park in Kilmarnock is an early 20th-century feature consisting of two groups of wrought-iron entrance gates and railings, each with distinct designs.
The main entrance includes a group of wrought-iron railings and central gates, flanked by open access gates. These gates and railings are painted green, with the cresting painted white. The wrought-iron gate piers are open square columns featuring central railings topped with spear finials and crowning crests. The pair of central gates has 12 railings each, with an additional 13 railings on the lower half, all adorned with fleur-de-lys finials. Each gate displays a heraldic shield featuring the Burgh coat-of-arms on its upper half, topped with fanciful cresting. The railings have small piers that match the gate piers, and they curve away from the main gates, also featuring fleur-de-lys finials.
The south entrance consists of a group of seven waist-height wrought-iron railed sections along with a continuous railing, all painted black and also featuring fleur-de-lys finials. The gatepiers here have square shafts with cushion caps and ball finials. The gates include end-hinged gates with concave sections for bicycle access, complemented by small piers that mirror the larger gatepiers. There are two straight sections with a central section set back for pedestrian access.
