Description
The Memorial Gates to Abertillery and District Hospital are cast-iron gates and gate-piers. The main gates are paired and flanked by a smaller side gate on the left, which is balanced by a fixed rail section on the right. The square-section piers feature moulded panel details, capitals, and ornate caps on the main gates, while the terminal piers on either side are simpler in design. The main gates have closely spaced rails and a diagonal brace below the dog bar, with side panels displaying a lyre motif above it and ornate scroll-work on the top rail. The side gate and the fixed rail section to the right share similar decorative details, but the top rail of the side gate is swept down. There is a short length of plain spearhead railings beyond the side gate, positioned at right angles to the fixed rail section. The design of the main gates incorporates original cast panels that record the history, which are set beneath the top rail.
