Description

St Marnock's Parish Church, designed by James Ingram in 1836, is a rectangular, six-bay church built in the Perpendicular Gothic style. It features a centrally placed four-stage tower at the north gable, constructed from pink sandstone with a base and string course, and is supported by angle, diagonal, and octagonal clasping buttresses.

The north elevation showcases a central two-leaf gothic panelled door at ground level, which is recessed under a pointed arch with moulded reveals and a crocketed ogival hood-mould. The tower, which breaks the gablehead, has a tall window with reticulated tracery set beneath a square-panelled head, a clock in a lozenge panel above, and a louvered opening with panel tracery and an ogival hood-mould in the upper stage. The battlemented parapet features square angle pinnacles. Flanking the tower are battlemented gables with tall panel-traceried windows below, and octagonal blind panelled terminal buttresses topped with crocketed and finialled caps.

The east elevation contains five similarly traceried windows, with a timber gothic door in the sixth bay, which has a hood-mould and blind lancets above. The south elevation features three geometric traceried windows, with the central window being the tallest. The gablehead finial has been removed, but diagonally placed angle buttresses and finials remain. A later single-storey addition is present on this elevation. The west elevation mirrors the east with five similarly traceried windows and a timber gothic door in the first bay, also featuring a hood-mould and blind lancets above.

Most windows are adorned with stained glass in square quarry patterns. The church has a piended grey slate roof with lead flashings and painted cast-iron rainwater goods. Inside, the church boasts a gothic revival interior, complete with the original lectern and organ.
