Description

The gates and railings at the entrance to South Lodge were built in the mid-20th century and are made of cast iron. The gate piers are set back and approximately 3 meters high, featuring anthemion motifs on the shafts and three-dimensional key pattern bases on the pedestals, topped with gadrooned urns. These piers support tall double gates that have spear-headed rails and horizontal bands at the top, middle, and base, with circles between the rails. Above the central rail, there are similar spearheads in the spaces. The lower parts of the gates include large oval panels with small central ovals, radial bars, and anthemion motifs at the corners.

The railings, which are similar in design, sit on a wide chamfered plinth and curve forward, extending approximately 20 meters to each side. The piers supporting the railings are similar to the gate piers and also feature urn finials. To the left, there is a single pedestrian gate, while to the right, the railings connect with stone gatepiers at the entrance to Sion Hill Place. In front of the main double gates, solid cast iron stanchions with urn finials support hinged guard rails that match the design of the gates.

This impressive collection of Regency-style cast iron street furniture was created to serve as the entrance screen to Ernest Cook's enhancement of Summerhill, Sion Hill Place, and represents a high-quality pastiche of the style.
