Description

Carnwath Sports Pavilion, located in King George's Park on Biggar Road, was designed by J H Fraser Stewart and completed in 1935. This single-storey, symmetrical building features a roughly rectangular plan in the International style, with a prominent bowed and cantilevered central bay flanked by shorter rectangular wings. The exterior is finished with cement harl on expanded metal lath cladding and has a brick cavity wall, with a brick base course and a slightly recessed window course on the wings, side, and rear elevations. The parapet wallhead has lead capping, and there is a concrete plinth with a flat concrete cantilevered canopy over the central bay.

The pavilion includes chamfered openings and a semicircular concrete entrance plinth with flat concrete canopies over the entrance doors at both the east and west ends. The central bay features painted concrete cills, predominantly ledge and braced timber doors with square glazing at the top, and metal-framed casement windows with plate glass, including 10-pane and 15-pane vertical windows in the central bay. A concrete step leads up to the entrance doors, and the building has a flat felt roof.

Inside, the pavilion has a simple layout, with a central bowed lounge area that includes a kitchen and bar at the rear, while the flanking wings contain changing rooms and storage facilities.
