Description
Wallness Bridge is a bridge dated 1880, constructed from ashlar, cast-iron, and wrought-iron or steel. The ironwork was cast by George Smith and Co in Glasgow. It features red sandstone ashlar abutments topped with a white ashlar moulded cornice and caps on the terminal piers. The piers are adorned with an enriched frieze that includes acanthus decoration and display the insignia of Salford Corporation along with the date in low relief panels. The bridge has a cast-iron balustraded parapet with a stone sill and coping between the outer piers, leading to braced lattice work trusses made of wrought-iron or steel over the main span, which are decorated with rosettes over the rivets on the inner face. The bridge is impressively detailed and scaled throughout.
