Description

Nos. 119, 121, and 123 Gerald Road, including No. 1 Littleton Road, are shop premises dated 1909. The building is constructed of red brick with glazed brick and yellow and green faience dressings, topped with a plain tiled roof. It features a mixed classical and Arts and Crafts style and has a triangular plan with two main facades that meet at an acute angle, marked by a tower.

The exterior is two storeys high, with shop units accessed from Gerald Road and serviced from the rear elevation on Littleton Road. Although the shop fronts have been renewed, the fascia and green faience pilasters remain. A round-arched doorway is located at the base of the polygonal angle turret, with a curved keystone that carries a faience frieze. The upper storey of the turret has three round-arched windows, and a cornice oversails on brackets and scallop tiles leading to an ogee cupola roof.

On the return elevation to Littleton Road, there is one bay shop window with pilasters and fascia, followed by three round-arched windows featuring green faience voussoirs and stressed keystones that reach the sill-band of the upper storey. No. 1 Littleton Road has a carriageway entrance with double doors, a canted bay window to the right, and three windows above. At the first-floor level, the shop elevations are identical, each with wide gables and a range of six arcaded windows beneath, all adorned with yellow faience dressings. A low relief faience panel near the apex records 'Pendleton Cooperative Industrial Society Ltd.'. Each facade has a single three-light casement to the left of the gable and two to the right. The hipped roof is topped at the angle by a leaded lantern with a small louvred cupola and features ridge cresting with finials. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this building was originally the butchery department of the former Pendleton Cooperative Industrial Society.
