Description

Nos. 388 and 390 on Lower Broughton Road are a pair of cottages dating from the mid-19th century, although they contain significant remains of an earlier core, likely from the 17th century. The buildings are constructed of brick with remnants of timber-framing and feature a Welsh slate roof.

The cottages are two stories high and create a charming composition with parallel ranges that were originally symmetrical and connected by a lower wing. No. 390 appears to be entirely from the mid-19th century. Its main entrance is centrally located in a recessed porch with a timber lintel and decorative details in the spandrels. There are projecting squared bay windows on either side, which may have been added in the later 19th century, and sash windows are present above. The gable wall has inserted windows, but the ornamental hoodmoulds from earlier openings remain visible. The eaves are steeply overhanging and feature decorative bargeboards in the gable.

To the right is the lower wing, which has a similar window on the ground floor and a gabled dormer in the roof, also with overhanging eaves and a finial. The end wall and axial stacks are present. This lower wing connects to the gable end of No. 388, which runs parallel to No. 390. No. 388 is made of painted brick with remnants of timber-framing in square panels on the right side and has a heavy slate roof. The left-hand section is likely rebuilt in brick and has inserted windows in a projecting brick panel. The advanced gable on the right is a separate build, also in painted brick but with a separate Welsh slate roof. There is a doorway in the angle of this gable, which has an added porch. The advanced right-hand gable features inserted windows in original openings with dentilled hoodmoulds above, and the eaves are decorated with bargeboards. Stacks are located at the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
