Description
The Railway Bridge on Murieston Crescent in Edinburgh dates from the later 19th century. It is a cast-iron double plate girder bridge featuring pierced brackets and splayed battered retaining wing walls, which are terminated by piers to the east, with later wing walls to the west. At the southwest corner, there are quadrant walls and a gateway.
The bridge and its retaining walls are constructed from squared, snecked, and stugged cream sandstone. Channelled ashlar piers support polished red ashlar corniced and panelled dies at each corner. The solid four-plate iron parapet, divided by panelled pilasters, retains traces of applied cast-iron mouldings. The wing walls have saddleback ashlar copings and are terminated by panelled ashlar piers with pyramidal caps that support ball finials, although the ball finial on the northeast pier is missing.
The approach road is flanked by a continuation of the wing walls, which consist of quadrant walls made from squared and snecked bull-nosed cream sandstone, topped with saddleback ashlar coping. The gatepiers are made of red ashlar and feature a fluted frieze, cornice, and swept pyramidal caps.
