Description
The lodge at Dalry Cemetery on Dalry Road in Edinburgh, likely designed by David Cousin in 1846, is a two-storey building in the Tudor Gothic style. It features a Greek cross plan that is mostly symmetrical, with the first floor extending beyond the eaves. The lodge has steeply pitched gabled roofs on each side and is constructed from squared and snecked ashlar, which has been scarred and patched following extensive cleaning and restoration, with polished ashlar margins.
The building includes windows on both floors, each with hoodmoulds. On the northeast side, there is a door at basement level to the left, and a forestairs leading to a ground floor door on the right. Buttresses flank the square-headed, cusped three-light windows on the ground floor of the northwest and southeast elevations. An oriel window is located on the first floor of the northwest side, while a bipartite window is found on the first floor of the southeast side. Slit attic windows are present on all sides except the southwest.
The lodge features timber sash and case windows with plate glass glazing. The roofs have sawtooth skews, gablet skewputts with niches, and stone fleur-de-lys decorations at each gablehead, along with a stone ridge and grey fish-scale slates. There are chimneys located in the re-entrant angles to the north and south, although the paired Tudor diamond-shaped stacks were removed during restoration.
