Description

The Royal Bank of Scotland, located at 6 and 8 Gorgie Road in Edinburgh, was designed by Thomas Purves Marwick and completed in 1899. This building is a two-storey, three-bay Italian Renaissance bank with a manager's flat and a basement, featuring a canted entrance bay. The exterior is finished in red polished ashlar, while the side elevation is made of squared and snecked rubble with ashlar margins.

The south elevation facing Gorgie Road has a two-storey, three-bay design with a fourth entrance bay at a chamfered angle to the right. The main openings are framed with architraves and scrolled keystones, with rectangular windows on the first floor. There is a dividing cornice, a moulded cill course on the first floor, and an eaves entablature topped with an ashlar parapet. The entrance bay features an Ionic columned doorcase with a round-headed architraved blind fanlight, scrolled consoles, and a cornice, along with a two-leaf panelled door and a window above. The ground floor windows are arcaded with Tuscan columns, and there are square-headed half-basement openings with chamfered arrises that are now blocked. Each floor is flanked by panelled pilasters, which are banded at the ground level.

The east elevation, which faces an alley, is three-storey and has four bays along with a stair tower. The second storey features two round-headed windows for the office, while the other windows are rectangular. The fourth bay is curved with bowed windows and is adjacent to a D-plan stair tower that has an entrance at ground level and two windows to the north.

The building has timber sash and case plate windows and a flat roof. Inside, the banking hall and offices have been refitted, while the flat above retains some decorative plasterwork.
