Description

The Royal Bank of Scotland, located at 4 Bank Road in East Linton, was built around 1900 by T P Marwick as the National Bank of Scotland. This two-storey, three-bay bank features an asymmetrical design and is constructed from squared and snecked cream sandstone with red ashlar dressings, along with stone mullions and transoms. The sides and rear are made of rubble, and there are occasional relieving arches and shaped gables.

On the southeast elevation, there is a central door leading to a columned porch topped with a mannered parapet. To the left, there is a four-light window, while the right side has an advanced two-storey bay with a projecting rectangular tripartite window at the ground level and a mannered blocking course. The first floor includes windows in each bay: a bipartite window at the center, a tripartite window to the left, and a bipartite window with a stone mullion and transom to the right.

The west elevation features a bipartite window at the center of the ground floor and a window with a stone transom to the left. An advanced two-storey bay is located on the right, showcasing canted bay windows on both the ground and first floors, along with a mannered blocking course. The first floor window on the outer left breaks the eaves, set within a curvilinear gabled dormerhead with a finial.

On the east elevation, there is an advanced two-storey central bay with a mannered parapet and a transomed stair window, along with a small window at the ground level. The flanking bay to the right has a window on each floor, with the first floor window breaking the eaves in a dormerhead similar to the previous elevation. A single-storey service wing projects to the north at the rear. The building features sash and case windows, with six-pane glazing in the upper case and two panes in the lower case.

The advanced bays have shaped gables with mannered ashlar coped skews and scroll skewputts. The roof is covered with grey slates and terracotta ridge tiles, and there are corniced stone stacks and decorative gutter fixtures. A low ashlar coped sandstone retaining wall with piers and gatepiers surrounds the property, although the railings have been removed. There is a pedestrian gateway to the rear with a corniced overthrow.
