Description
The Railway Bridge on Gorgie Road in Edinburgh was designed by Donald Matheson, Chief Engineer of the Caledonian Railway Company, and completed in 1909. This iron girder bridge is set at an angle to the road, running from northeast to southwest. It features decorative brackets made of painted cast iron, adorned with wrought iron ribbons, wreaths, scrolls, and leaves. The bridge is supported by a channelled ashlar base, with an upstanding pier at each corner that has a dentilled cornice and an escutcheon panel. The supporting walls are downswept and coped, ending in small corniced piers. At the northwest and southeast ends of the bridge, there are single-storey corniced pavilions that were originally public toilets.
