Coatbridge, Caledonian Railway Bridge, Monkland Canal

The Coatbridge Caledonian Railway Bridge, built in 1898 by the Caledonian Railway Company and Brandon Bridge Company of Motherwell, is a railway bridge made of cast iron, mild steel, and masonry. It features parallel plate girders that are doubled in depth over the canal. The bridge has a lattice steel parapet made of C-section members and is supported by rusticated red sandstone ashlar and droved ashlar piers, which include polished ashlar cutwaters. The terminals of the bridge are also rusticated ashlar, topped with a cornice and pyramidal capstones.

There is a footbridge on the west side of the piers, which includes round-arched openings through the piers, lattice steel sides, and steel overhead arch ties.

To the north, there is an access stair building made of red brick, featuring a piended slate roof and segmental-arched windows. It has a glazed brick band course at the eaves and blocked doors leading to the platform and lower level.
