Description

The gatehouse at Summerlee Ironworks, built in the later 19th century, is a two-storey, two-bay symmetrical structure that now serves as offices. It features a single-storey, two-bay projection to the east. The building is constructed of stugged stone that is heavily painted. The first floor slightly juts out on a corbel course, and there is a base course, projecting cills, an eaves band, and segmental lintels on the front. Dormers break the eaves, and there is a single-storey extension at the rear.

On the west (principal) elevation, the entrance is centrally located and features a segmental-arched two-pane fanlight at the ground level, with a bracketed slab hood above. Windows are located in the bays to the left and right, with gabled dormer heads that have corbelled copes. The single-storey bays to the left include a chamfered stone-mullioned bipartite window and a single window that was formerly a door.

The south (side) elevation has a pitched roof with a canted triangular bay that contains two-light windows, along with a blind gun loop decoration at the gablehead. The north elevation features a two-light window in the projection and another blind gun loop at the gable.

The windows are timber sash and case with four-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are stone skews with moulded skewputts. Gablehead stacks are topped with circular clay cans, and the building has cast iron rainwater goods.

Additionally, there is a boundary wall made of semicircular coped rubble that runs to the south.
