Description

The gatehouse at Bonkyl dates from the later to late 19th century and features later additions and alterations. It is a single-storey building with an attic, designed in the English Domestic style, and has an L-plan layout with a flat-roofed addition on one side. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked, lightly bull-faced cream sandstone, with lightly tooled ashlar dressings. The building has overhanging bracketed timber eaves and prominent timber brackets beneath the oversailing, whitewashed harled gableheads, which are half-timbered on the southwest side. It also features timber bargeboards, ashlar quoins, and long and short surrounds to chamfered openings, with flush cills.

On the northwest (entrance) elevation, there is a two-bay wing to the right that includes a boarded timber door on the left and a shouldered seat recess on the right. A full-width lean-to verandah is attached to the front, supported by square-plan timber columns and arched brackets, forming a three-bay arcade. The gabled wing on the left is advanced and has a projecting rectangular window centered at the ground level. A modern window is located in the flat-roofed addition, recessed to the outer left.

The southwest (side) elevation features a gabled wing projecting to the right, which has a four-light canted window centered at the ground level, an attic window centered in the gablehead above, and a narrow window at ground level offset to the left. There is also a window centered in the wing, recessed to the outer left.

On the southeast (rear) elevation, the original two-bay block has windows in both bays, with a flat-roofed addition to the outer right. The northeast (side) elevation includes a near full-width flat-roofed addition at the front and an attic window in the surmounting gablehead.

The building features some small-pane and plate glass timber windows, although modern glazing is present in parts. The roof is covered with red tiles and pantile ridging, and there are corniced sandstone stacks with circular cans. The interior was not seen in 1998.
