Description
8 Preston Farm Cottages is a pair of single-storey cottages with an attic, likely built in the late 18th to early 19th century, with later additions and alterations. They form a symmetrical six-bay block, with a lean-to addition at the rear. The exterior features harled rubble, which is partially exposed, with cream sandstone dressings and a dry-dashed rear addition. The cottages have chamfered margins, projecting painted cills, rendered margins on the gabled dormers, and timber-mullioned bipartite windows.
On the west (entrance) elevation, each cottage has a boarded timber door at the center. There is a single window at ground level in the outer right bay of No 8 and the outer left bay of No 9, with bipartite windows in the adjacent bays. Gabled bipartite dormers break the eaves above. The north (side) elevation is blind, while the east (rear) elevation features a regularly fenestrated, near full-width lean-to addition with single windows recessed in the outer right and left bays. The south (side) elevation is also blind.
The front windows have diamond-paned casement glazing, while the rear features plate glass timber sash and case windows, along with small rooflights. The roof is covered with grey slate, has stone ridging, bracketed skewputts, and cast-iron rainwater goods. There are corniced, brick-built ridge and apex stacks with various circular cans. The interior was not seen in 1998.
