Description

The lodge at North Merchiston Cemetery, located on Ardmillan Terrace in Edinburgh, dates from around 1881 and features a modern addition to the north. This two-storey gabled lodge has a single-storey service block to the north, with the first floor breaking the eaves. It is constructed from coursed and stugged sandstone with chamfered arrises and has overhanging eaves with moulded bargeboards on the west side and plain bargeboards on the east. The lodge has small windows and gabled dormerheads on the first-floor windows that also break the eaves. The windows are detailed with ashlar mullions.

On the west elevation, there are three bays, with an advanced gabled bay at the center featuring a modern door and lights within a shouldered doorframe at the ground level, and a window above the door. The flanking bays each have a bipartite window on both floors. To the left, there is a single-storey service wing that is obscured by a modern addition.

The east elevation also has three bays, with an advanced stair bay at the center that includes a door at ground level and a bipartite window above. This is flanked by similarly advanced ground-floor bays with pentice roofs, with the northern bay extending into the service wing. The south elevation is gabled and features a single window in the center on both floors.

The service block is gabled and is adjacent to the north gable of the lodge, linking to a gabled two-storey addition at right angles. There is a modern glazed sun-lounge in the re-entrant angle to the west. The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, and the roof is covered with grey slates. A broad chamfered coped stack is located at the center of the building.
