Description
Cruck Cottage in Torthorwald is a largely rebuilt cottage, likely from the first half of the 19th century. It is a single-storey, three-bay structure with a thatched roof and is constructed from limewashed rubble. The cottage was damaged by fire in 1956 but was restored and re-thatched in 1960. Further restoration took place between 1991 and 1993, and it was re-thatched with rye straw and a heather ridge in the early 21st century.
The south elevation features a central door flanked by two deeply recessed windows with four-pane sash frames. There is a single window with lying panes on each gable, and an off-centre door is located in the north wall. A chimney stack is positioned on the west gable, with thatch extending around the chimney.
Inside, the crucks and tie beams are exposed, and the interior partitions have been removed.
