Description
Tinwald House is a classical mansion designed by architect William Adam and dated 1740. The building features two storeys above a raised basement, constructed of polished red ashlar with a channelled basement on both the front and rear elevations, and rusticated quoins.
The southwest front has seven bays, with the three inner bays slightly advanced and topped with a pediment. There is a balustraded square perron, and all openings above the base course are framed in lugged and keystoned architraves. The doorway is pedimented and has a pulvinated frieze, although it features a modern door. The ground floor windows have aprons and 18-pane sashes, while the upper floor has 12-pane sashes with bracketed cills. A cornice and parapet with urns are present over the outer bays, and there are symmetrically placed corniced stacks on a piended and platform roof. Each of the three-bay flanks includes a full-height canted inner bay and a pedimented porch at the basement level. The six-bay rear elevation has two inner bays that are advanced and pedimented.
The interior was damaged by fire around 1946 and was reconstructed in 1947, as noted on the roof leadwork, resulting in a simplified design with a partly altered plan.
