Description
Tinwald Manse is a two-storey building designed by architect Walter Newall of Dumfries, built around 1837. The manse features a symmetrical three-bay east front, which serves as the entrance, and a two-bay full-height rear wing. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar with chamfered margins.
On the east elevation, there is a central panelled door topped with a fanlight, and brackets that support a deep open pediment above. The windows are 12-pane sashes, and the building has a plain eaves cornice, shaped skews, and corbelled end stacks with corniced diamond flues, including a single flue over the south gable. The roof is covered with slate.
At the northeast angle, a wall returns east and steps down towards the garage, while the roof of the wing sweeps down over the kitchen. The south elevation has three bays, with an advanced gable to the right and tripartite windows on the ground floor. In 1900, the manse was renovated and had additions made to the rear by James Barbour of Dumfries.
