Description

The Tarff Hotel, located at 69-71 Main Street in Kirkcowan, is an early 19th century building that consists of two linked two-storey houses, with their gable ends facing the street. The structure is built from rubble, harled, and painted, featuring some painted margins and quoin strips.

The house on the right is the earlier of the two, displaying a two-bay gable to the street with two windows on each floor. The right return elevation is mostly blank, except for a modern window at both the ground and first floors, which breaks the eaves in a flat-roofed dormer head. An off-centre door is located to the right of the left return elevation, flanked by windows, with an additional window to the outer left. There are also two first-floor windows that break the eaves in a shared dormer head to the outer left.

The later house on the left also features a two-bay gable to the street with two windows on each floor. The door is situated on the right return, accompanied by windows in the flanking bays. A stair window is found on the largely blank left return elevation, along with a first-floor window.

Additional single-storey buildings, including flat-roofed extensions, are located to the northeast. The windows are primarily sash and case with a plate glass glazing pattern, alongside one modern window. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and the building features ashlar coped skews and harled stacks, as well as small roof lights.
