Merlewood, Haywood Road, Moffat

Merlewood is a later 19th century, single storey and attic, asymmetrical cottage located on Haywood Road in Moffat. The building is constructed of snecked whinstone with red sandstone dressings, featuring a mannered rubble treatment on the east gable end.

On the south elevation, there is a round arched door set behind a pilastered doorpiece with a shaped blocking course. To the east, there is a slightly projecting bipartite window, while to the west, a gabled bay features a bold two-storey semi-circular projection with three windows on each floor and a tall conical slate roof.

The east elevation is gabled and has a central stack that is emphasised by decorative corbelling and margins, with two flanking windows under pointed hood-moulds. The roof is slate. Additionally, there are octagonal gatepiers and a decorative cast-iron gate.
