Description
The Royal Bank of Scotland, located at 17-19 Bank Street in Dumfries, is an Italianate bank building designed by Peddie & Kinnear in 1856. It stands three storeys tall and features five bays. The exterior is made of polished red ashlar, accented by architraves and rusticated quoins. The ground floor has been refaced with granite during the inter-war period.
The building has a symmetrical design, with the first floor showcasing corniced round-arched windows that include sculptured spandrels. The second floor features shouldered windows with a deep cill band, and all windows are sash types with a four-pane glazing pattern. A decorative frieze and a prominent modillion cornice add to the architectural detail. The roof is covered with slate.
