Description
Queens Court House, located at 39 Sandgate in Ayr, is a three-storey, five-bay former bank built in 1857 by Peddie & Kinnear, showcasing Italian Renaissance architectural style. The building features polished ashlar stonework with a base course, a connecting springing line to the ground floor windows, a frieze at the ground floor, and cill courses on the first and second floors, which include a fretwork frieze on the northeast elevation. Decorative roundels are present within the eaves course on the northeast elevation, along with a dentilled frieze and a mutuled cornice. The corners of the building are accentuated with raised quoins.
The ground floor has round-arched windows with aprons, architraves extending from the springing line to the crown, and keystones on the northeast elevation. The first-floor round-arched windows feature consoled cornices, keystones, and ornamental work in the spandrels, while the second floor has shouldered-arched architraved windows.
On the northwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, there are entrances at the outer right and left, adorned with decorative consoled doorpieces, shell tympana, and keystones. The entrance features two-leaf timber doors, with three single windows positioned between them. The upper floors display regular fenestration.
The northeast elevation, facing Newmarket Street, consists of four bays with regular fenestration on all floors and an additional single bay on the outer left. The building is fitted with four-pane timber sash and case windows and has a grey slate low-pitched roof with corniced wallhead stacks.
Inside, the reception rooms retain decorative friezes and cornices, and the staircase is enhanced with cast-iron barley sugar balusters and a timber handrail.
