Description
Queen's Court, located at 41 Sandgate in Ayr, is a former club building designed by John Murdoch and dated 1873. It is a single structure with 2 and 3 storeys, featuring a 6-bay asymmetrical plan that is grouped in a 5-3 arrangement. The building is constructed from rubble and has square-headed openings.
On the northwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, there are entrances positioned to the outer left and right of a recessed 5-bay section. To the left, there is a 2-leaf timber door with a letterbox fanlight, and to the right, an iron gate. The remaining central bays have single windows at both the ground and first floors, with an additional single window at the first floor to the outer left. At the attic level, there is a 2-light central dormer. The outer right and left sides of the advanced gabled 3-bay section feature single shop windows at the ground floor, while the first and second floors have tripartite windows with a stepped hoodmould at the first floor. Above, the wallhead is stepped leading to a crowstepped gable. There is an iron and glass veranda at the ground level in the re-entrant angle, and the penultimate bay to the right has a crowstepped gable.
The upper floors predominantly feature timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes crowstepped skews, gablehead stacks, and circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1998. The entrance elevation is complemented by spear-headed railings atop a coped boundary wall, and there are barley-sugar posts supporting three lamp standards.
