Description
The Clydesdale Bank, located at 23 Bank Street in Dumfries, is an Edwardian baroque building dating from around 1914. This single-storey bank features a distinctive entrance set at a canted angle. The exterior is finished in polished red ashlar, with channelled outer pilaster strips and a continuous entablature that includes a pulvinated frieze and a plain parapet.
An ornate aedicular doorpiece, designed in the Ionic style, is highlighted by a broken pediment and a cartouche, all set within a cavetto arch, with decorative swags draped from a consoled keyblock. The building has round-arched windows with cavetto reveals, with three bays facing Bank Street and two bays on Irish Street. The roof is concealed.
