Description

Style of Walter Newall. Barge-boarded picturesque

asymmetrical villa, now converted for use as Arts Centre.

2 storeys. Stugged red coursers with polished dressings

and margins, windows with deep cavetto cornices and

mostly aproned at ground. S elevation: 2 asymmetrically

gabled outer bays (canted window right and attic light),

narrow recessed entrance bay between, 4-panelled door

with fanlight and sidelights, bracketted balcony over

now glazed to eaves level. 2-bay W elevation with advanced

gable left. Windows (some blind) sashes, mostly plate

glass or with 12-pane glazing pattern. Projecting eaves;

elaborately carved barge-boards; corniced squat stacks;

slate roof with rooflights.

Interior: much altered during conversion to Art Gallery;

2 ground floor rooms nearest main road have good cornice

and ceiling plasterwork; cantilevered stone stair with

cast-iron balusters.

Rubble-built ashlar-coped boundary wall at W, altered

square gatepiers now capped with stone eagles.
