Description
Gracefield Arts Centre is a two-storey villa designed in the picturesque style by Walter Newall, now repurposed as an arts centre. The building features stugged red coursers with polished dressings and margins, and windows that have deep cavetto cornices, most of which are aproned at ground level.
The south elevation has two asymmetrically gabled outer bays, with a canted window on the right and an attic light. There is a narrow recessed entrance bay in between, which includes a four-panelled door with a fanlight and sidelights, and a bracketed balcony above that has been glazed to eaves level. The west elevation consists of two bays with an advanced gable on the left. The windows, some of which are blind, are mostly sash types, featuring either plate glass or a 12-pane glazing pattern. The building has projecting eaves, elaborately carved barge-boards, corniced squat stacks, and a slate roof with rooflights.
Inside, the space has been significantly altered during its conversion to an art gallery. The two ground floor rooms closest to the main road retain good cornice and ceiling plasterwork, and there is a cantilevered stone stair with cast-iron balusters.
The property is enclosed by a rubble-built ashlar-coped boundary wall on the west side, which has altered square gatepiers now topped with stone eagles.
