Description

Elmbank School is a large, asymmetrical villa built in the mid-19th century. It is a single-storey building with attics, featuring a second storey that is squeezed in below the eaves. The villa has a turreted rectangular bay that rises a storey higher, complete with grouped flues and a finialed pavilion roof. The exterior is constructed from stugged red coursers with polished dressings and chamfered margins.

The south elevation has three bays, including a gabled shallow inner porch with a panelled door, fanlight, and hood-mould. To the left, there is a gable with a main roof that extends over a full-height projecting bay, which is canted at the ground level. The right bay features a dormer. The long west elevation has an off-centre gable, with a projecting ground floor bipartite to the right and additional dormers. The sash windows predominantly have a 4-pane glazing pattern. Other notable features include projecting eaves, elaborately carved barge boards, and stacks with grouped flues, all topped with fish-scale slated roofs.

Inside, the building has undergone some alterations and is now divided into two flats, with a school at ground level and radio studios above. The staircase at ground level has been removed, but some cornice plasterwork and panelled doors in architraves remain.
