Description

Slater and Carpenter of London, 1867. Aisled Gothic church

with unaisled lower 2-bay chancel at S, tower at NE angle

almost free-standing. Galillee added late in 19th century; hall

to W extended by W F Crombie, 1925. Bull-faced red ashlar with

polished dressings and plain or hood-moulded lancets.

Tower: plain lower stages with paired E-facing doors, engaged

stair turret to lower stages of S wall, louvred bipartites

at belfry stage; broached stone spire (120' high) with

lucarnes.

Single lights to buttressed aisle bays, close-spaced clerestory

lights. Blocked eaves; cross-finialled gables; slate roofs.

Galillee has arcaded lights.

Hall is similarly detailed, with main gable elevation to N.

Interior: Some work by H O Tarbolton, executed by firm of

Scott Morton; unplastered walls; aisle arcades contrasting

red and white ashlar, circular piers with foliated capitals;

some good furnishings and detailing; carved timber rood

screen and choir stalls; mosaic reredos.
