Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist, located on Newall Terrace in Dumfries, is an aisled Gothic church designed by Slater and Carpenter of London in 1867. It features an unaisled lower two-bay chancel at the south and a tower at the northeast angle that is almost free-standing. A Galilee was added in the late 19th century, and the hall to the west was extended by W F Crombie in 1925. The church is constructed of bull-faced red ashlar with polished dressings and has plain or hood-moulded lancets.

The tower has plain lower stages with paired east-facing doors and an engaged stair turret on the south wall. The belfry stage features louvred bipartite windows, and the tower is topped with a broached stone spire that reaches 120 feet high and includes lucarnes. The aisle bays are buttressed with single lights, and there are closely spaced clerestory lights. The eaves are blocked, and the gables are cross-finialled, all under slate roofs. The Galilee has arcaded lights.

The hall is similarly detailed, with the main gable elevation facing north. Inside, some work was done by H O Tarbolton and executed by the firm of Scott Morton. The walls are unplastered, and the aisle arcades feature contrasting red and white ashlar with circular piers that have foliated capitals. The interior includes some notable furnishings and detailing, such as a carved timber rood screen, choir stalls, and a mosaic reredos.
