Description

The Station Hotel, located on Station Road in Dumfries, dates back to 1896 and serves as a railway hotel. It stands three storeys tall, with a basement and attics, featuring nine bays facing the station court, where the outer pairs of bays are slightly advanced. The building is constructed of squared red rubble, accented with contrasting ashlar dressings, and has a cill band at the first floor that encircles the entire structure.

The eastern facade was originally symmetrical, showcasing a central projecting gabled porch that partly covers the steps leading from the pavement, with cast-iron lamps at the base. The outer two bays are slightly advanced, and there is a later addition of a large seven-light canted bay that projects from the west side at the ground floor. The eastern side features two tripartite windows, while the upper floors display a symmetrical arrangement of one, two, and three-light windows. There are three flat-roofed three-light dormers at the centre and large four-light, timber-framed gabled dormers above the outer bays. The dormer casements have small panes, and the upper sashes are complemented by four-pane lower sashes.

The lover's walk facade is asymmetrical, featuring a central projecting glazed timber porch with tripartite stair windows above. The remaining windows on this side are one and two-light. There is a raised gable towards the east with a projecting flue and an apex stack.

The side elevations are symmetrical, consisting of three bays with two canted outer ground floor windows. They also feature a raised wallhead chimney gable with an arched window, scrolled skewputts, and an apex stack. The building is topped with a broad-eaved, piended slate roof that includes a large central octagonal cupola adorned with an elaborate balcony and a candle snuffer roof.

The hotel is set within a retaining wall that is complemented by cast-iron railings.
