Description

Chapelmount, located at 16 Laurieknowe in Dumfries, is a large asymmetrical villa built between 1850 and 1860, incorporating a villa from around 1840. The building features a picturesque design with a barge-boarded style, consisting of a single storey and an attic, along with a three-storey square tower that is recessed on the northeast flank and topped with a boldly-bracketted pyramidal roof.

The exterior is finished in painted ashlar. On the southeast elevation, there are shallow advanced outer gables, and to the right, a canted ground floor window is topped with a deep cavetto cornice. A steep-gabled porch is located in the re-entrant angle, featuring a Tudor-arched door and richly-carved barge-boards. The left gable has a three-light ground floor window, while the attic includes windows, including an off-centre dormer with barge-boarding, although the stone mullions have been removed and the glazing has been altered.

The tower has two round-headed loops at the ground level and two cusped-headed lights at the third floor. The building's ends feature axial stacks, some with projecting chimney breasts, and paired circular or diamond flues. The roofs are covered with slate, and the tower displays fish-scale banding.
