Thorncliffe, 1 Victoria Circus, Dowanhill, Glasgow

Thorncliffe, located at 1 Victoria Circus in Dowanhill, Glasgow, is a detached villa built in the mid-19th century, showcasing classical architectural details. The villa is two stories high with attics and features a main elevation that consists of three bays, along with a recessed two-bay wing to the west. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar with smooth rusticated quoins.

The main elevation includes steps leading up to a Doric pillar porch, which has antefixae on its low piended roof and is adorned with low cast-iron railings at the parapet. The porch features a pilastered arched doorpiece with double-leaf panelled doors. On either side of the porch, there are canted windows at ground level that are corniced and topped with a blocking course, also supported by low decorative cast-iron railings. The first-floor windows are architraved and bipartite, positioned above the canted windows.

The recessed wing to the west is simply detailed with two bays and has bipartite architraved windows. The east flank and rear are finished in stugged ashlar, with windows that have polished margins. The rear elevation is asymmetrical with five bays and includes a single-storey range of domestic offices projecting to the southeast. To the right, there is a prominent seven-light bow window on both the ground and first floors.

Inside, there is a tall arched central stair window featuring leaded glass, and the attic houses a billiard room with a long low arcaded top light. The villa is topped with tall corniced axial stacks, some of which have octagonal flues, and the roofs are covered in slate.

The property is enclosed by a droved ashlar boundary wall with polished coping, complemented by tall square painted ashlar corniced gatepiers.
