Description
The Albert Club, located at 61 Irish Street in Dumfries, is a Greek Revival villa built in 1828. It has a rectangular plan with two storeys and an attic over a basement, featuring nearly identical three-bay east and west elevations, each with a central Greek Doric porch. The exterior is finished in polished red ashlar stone, which was cleaned in 1985, and includes architraves.
The building has corniced ground floor windows, which are consoled on the west side. There is a base course and a string course at the first floor cill level. The east side has a railed basement area, while the west side features a flight of steps leading to the door. A continuous main cornice runs along the top, and there are modern dormers and two pairs of symmetrically placed stacks. The roof is piended and platformed, covered with slate and lead.
There is a single-storey, single-bay addition on the south flank that faces west. This addition is recessed and continues the architectural details of the main house, with a flat roof concealed by a parapet and a modern fire escape on the east side.
Inside, the interior has been substantially altered, but some cornice details remain.
