Description

46-48 Bernard Street is a tenement building from the earlier 19th century that was remodeled by Kinnear and Peddie in 1887. It is three stories high with an attic and features three bays. The building is constructed from grey and cream sandstone, with a polished ashlar ground floor and dressed ashlar above, accented with polished dressings. The design includes a base course, shallow pilasters dividing the ground floor bays, a band course above the ground floor, and cill band courses at the first and second floors. It has a tall parapet with architraved windows; the center window on the first floor has a pediment, while the outer windows are corniced.

On the southwest (front) elevation, there is an architraved doorway on the outer right, flanked by shallow Ionic pilasters and topped with an open pediment. This doorway features a two-leaf panelled door. To the right, there is a bipartite transomed window, also from 1887. To the left of the center, there is another doorway with a two-leaf panelled door and a fanlight with radial astragals, along with a window on the outer left. The fenestration is regular throughout. The parapet has a corniced and panelled tablet at the center, with panelled dies terminating the ends.

The building also has two rectangular flat-roofed dormers. The windows are plate glass timber sash and case, with small-pane windows in the dormers. The roof is slate with metal flashings and features corniced mutual stacks. The interior was not seen in 1993.
