Description

42, 44, 46 Cockburn Street is a Baronial-style tenement building designed by architects Peddie and Kinnear between 1859 and 1861. It has three storeys and an attic, featuring a symmetrical four-bay façade with a shop on the ground floor. The building is topped with a crenellated parapet and has four finialled, segmentally-pedimented dormers in the attic. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked lightly stugged sandstone, with polished dressings, although the ground floor has been painted.

Notable architectural details include a moulded corbel table at the first floor, which steps up over blank panels between the windows, and another moulded corbel table below the parapet. The openings are stop-chamfered, and the building has a regular arrangement of windows. The entrance to the flats on the left features a timber-panelled door with a plate glass fanlight above it, while the shop has a two-leaf timber-panelled storm door and a recessed glazed door, also with a plate glass fanlight.

The shopfront is fitted with plate glass, while the windows above are timber sash and case with four-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are stone skews and corniced end stacks with circular cans.
