Description

50 Cockburn Street is a tenement building designed by architects Peddie and Kinnear between 1859 and 1861. It stands three stories high with an attic and features modern shops on the ground floor. The building is situated on a narrow, sloping site between Jackson's Close and Fleshmarket Close, with two bays facing Cockburn Street. The northeast bay is circular and corbelled out at the second floor, leading to a circular stair tower topped with a finialled, fish-scale slated conical roof.

The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked lightly stugged sandstone, with a continuous cornice at the ground floor. There is a blank crowstep-gabled bay on the Fleshmarket Close side, which includes a blank inscription panel. The gabled bay facing Cockburn Street features mullioned bipartite windows on the first and second floors. The windows are made of plate glass set in timber sash and case frames, with bowed glass on the corner tower. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the building has stone skews.
