Black Castle, 38-40 High Street, South Queensferry

Black Castle, located at 38-40 High Street in South Queensferry, dates back to 1626, as indicated by a date found in the east dormer. This two-storey and attic dwelling house features three bays and is finished with painted harl and broad painted margins.

The north elevation, which is the principal facade, showcases a late 18th century central doorpiece with a moulded architrave. It has single windows in the end bays, four first-floor windows, and three pedimented dormers with scroll cresting, along with two attic windows.

On the east elevation, there is a single window in the right bay at ground level, as well as one window each on the first floor and in the attic.

The south elevation includes a door in the right bay at ground level, with a modern forestair leading to a door on the first floor. There is also an outshot to the west and irregular fenestration.

The west elevation features a door in the left bay and windows above it. The building has timber sash and case windows, along with modern attic windows. The roof is slate, with crowstepped skews and tall stacks at the gableheads.
