Description

The Forth Bridge Hotel, located at 36 High Street in South Queensferry, is a Scots Baronial pub and tenement building that dates back to 1674, with a panel dated 1683. It was rebuilt in the 1890s and features a T-plan layout. The building stands three stories high with an attic and has three bays, presenting a nearly symmetrical facade. It is finished in painted harl with painted ashlar margins, and the central gable is corbelled out at the second floor.

On the north elevation, the pub front occupies the left bays and is designed as a tripartite structure. It has flanking double doors framed by slim fluted pilasters, topped by a deep entablature and cornice. The right bay features a bipartite window. The northwest corner connects to stairs leading to a terrace. The first floor has a paired window in the center, a single-storey canted bay to the left, and a tripartite window to the right. The second floor includes a bipartite window in the left bay, a paired window in the center, and a tripartite window in the right bay. A small window is present in the gablet, along with platform attic dormers.

The east elevation features a blind gable end that is attached to stairs leading to the Vennel. The rear wing has a bipartite window on the first floor and single windows on the second floor, along with platform dormers.

The south elevation displays irregular fenestration, while the west elevation has a blind gable end. The rear wing includes bipartite windows on the first floor and single windows on the second floor, as well as platform dormers. The entrance to the flats is located in the re-entrant angle.

The building showcases varied glazing patterns, an overhanging slated roof supported by timber brackets, crowstepped skews, and straight skews on the rear wing, with coped stacks at the gableheads.
