Burial Ground Extension, Colinton Parish Church, Dell Road, Edinburgh

The Burial Ground Extension at Colinton Parish Church, located on Dell Road in Edinburgh, mainly dates from the 18th century. It features a rubble enclosure wall with ashlar dressings and a segmentally arched gateway leading to Dell, accompanied by a small gatehouse. The structure has one window on the gable front and a slated roof with a large ashlar end stack at the rear.

Inside, there is a good series of family burial enclosures that are stepped along the slope, showcasing droved and channelled ashlar fronts with architraved pedimented doorways, one of which includes a well-crafted wrought iron gate. The Inglis vault features a Neo-Greek unfluted distyle in antis Doric front.

The burial ground also contains several sculptured tombstones, with many dating from the mid-18th century. Notably, there is a mausoleum for James Gillespie, who died in 1797, which has a channelled ashlar pedimented front, a semicircular arched entrance, and a stone slabbed roof.
